A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major public works projects.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” stated the country's president.
The official announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his government's economic vision for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The development of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in public works. They were executed at an rapid pace, defying forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised persistent apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party demanded an immediate halt in the development and management of all such projects.
This halt was suggested pending a full independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."
In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these strategic projects.
