The star has handed over the complete sum of his twenty-five thousand pound Mercury Prize prize money to the Music Venues Trust, which operates to preserve the UK's independent concert spaces.

Fender was awarded the prize on 16 October as his third album the album was declared the outstanding release of the last 12 months.

Fender has chosen to donate the funds to the trust, in recognition of the essential function local spots played in his early career.

"I would not have achieved my current career if it hadn't been for all the gigs I played around the area, and beyond, when I was just getting going," remarked Sam Fender. "These spaces are legendary, but they are in difficulty."

Since the start of 2023, more than 150 of these venues have shut down – roughly 16% of the whole industry in the UK.

Over the past year, well-known musicians including Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the trust in its attempts to keep the scene afloat, by adding a minor surcharge to their ticket prices, which goes to help independent venues.

Sam Fender also joined in, collecting over £100k on his live tour to assist thirty-eight grassroots venues across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The donation assisted locations that were facing potential shutdown due to issues caused by floods, fire incidents and bereavements, as well as permit problems, conflicts and noise complaints.

Additional spaces were granted funding support in modernizing amenities and technical equipment that positively impacted performers and audiences.

"The notion that revenue from performances in major spaces backs the independent spots, where it all starts for musicians like me, is just common sense," Sam Fender has said.

He is far from the only musician to give his honor funds to good deeds.

When Pulp received the trophy in 1996 for their release the album, frontman the singer announced that the band would contribute their cash to the non-profit War Child.

That year, rapper and singer she shared her prize between a few organizations, such as the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell organization.

"Additionally, I donated a thousand pounds to the center, to their gymnastics class, because I practiced gymnastics when I was a child and they required new equipment," the artist shared with a publication.

In recent years, the band donated their winnings to the youth organization that nurtured their band, alongside other independent music bodies.

And the 1994 recipients they donated their award to a multiple sclerosis charity after a acquaintance was identified with the illness.

"Winning was ample," said singer Small. "The money was the bonus but we didn't require the bonus, because we had the honor. So our winning touched somebody else's life."

Last week, the Music Venues Trust announced it had rescued several grassroots venues in that region, by transferring them to community ownership.

The Joiners in the city and the other in Bristol were acquired under the public acquisition program, which is funded by the arts council and enthusiasts who purchase "shares" in the buildings.
