The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and handed Everton their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had levelled the scores five minutes after the defender's opener, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of excellent saves to guarantee the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing Craig Pawson to review the goal on the screen and the referee decided that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's side up to third in the Premier League, five points off north London rivals and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and sit half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender fulfils duties at each end of the field

Following a uninspiring weekday display in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a mere attempts on goal, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the field, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's unavailability - added his second in added time as he rose above the England keeper to nod in.

Van de Ven was equally impressive in defence, partnering well with his defensive colleague as the duo handled superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton lacking striker's instinct

Everton's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have worn off slightly and fans headed to the exits after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The end in the team's winning streak at home will not be a massive worry for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' two recognised strikers - had netted only a single goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that miserable record on a damp and dreary night on Merseyside.

The striker's form was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, despite having space and time to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, too, was unable to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly delivered threatening crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.
