During an inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” America's largest city, ushering in “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious start to his administration.

A Historic Figure

The new figure, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A opportunity of this kind comes rarely and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hold the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani added.

Defying advice to temper hopes, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will rule boldly and broadly.”

Steering by Democratic Socialist Principles

Mamdani did not shy away from his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my principles for fear of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.

The ceremony was a dual event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.

An Ambitious Policy Agenda

Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

• Universal childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A cap on rents for nearly 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these services may be challenging to fund. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Headwinds

The new mayor also faces concern from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past social media posts.

Mamdani has attempted to address these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly cordial.

The Basic Challenges of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in delivering essential functions: sanitation, reducing the rat infestation, fixing potholes, and ensuring reliable subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his address with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
